How to stay on the safe side, How I distribute and create anchors in 2016

Probably you know that already but for all the newbies:

Anchor text is the visible and clickable text you can find in the website’s content. Like here: “…release a graphic video of a white Chicago police officer…” a graphic video is an anchor in this case,

I’m sure you will be using the web page builder with useful tools to create links but anyway HTML code to make is:

As you also propably know there are a few types of anchor texts. The most important categories, according to me, are:

  • generic keywords like CLICK HERE, WEBSITE, LINK etc.
  • brand keywords, mostly domains’ name (with or without extension .com .net .org etc.)
  • LSI keywords,  “Latent Semantic Indexing” – You can find them if you start typing some keywords in Google search bar: before you press Enter Google is kind to show you suggestions for LSI (great source to find keywords by the way)

There is also a lot more types of anchors SEO bosses have came up with, in my opinion, they are all the same, you can mix them etc. It isn’t that important now.

My approach to anchors

Let’s start dividing people doing SEO into few categories;

  • First one are those building/buying backlinks, fitting anchor keywords and its synonyms wherever they can.
  • Second are people that do the same thing but are just more cautious about anchors distribution following rules like kepping 1% exact anchors etc.
  • Third group, I believe the smallest one, are those who don’t care much about anchors, mostly don’t overcomplicate this part and leave it alone.

I was in all of them. I vary anchors techniques upon SEO project I’m working on, all depends on the final website goal and profile. Last group is the one I firmly advise you to be friend with, I’m there for most of my websites.

2016 SEO anchors

I believe recent MOZ experiment about the current ranking factors showed that keywords in anchor still value strongly. I agree with that and I don’t think things will much change in the future. We might see anchor factor devaluation in time but what won’t change in the next years is a backlink itself, without it the search engine wouldn’t know how to sort websites (I bet on that). The importance of backlinks is showed in another article of mine.

Coming back to anchors. Keyword and anchor’s distribution is a very gentle matter so I’m trying to see it otherwise. When it is right time to place a keyword in the anchor I try to see the relevancy big picture. I build relevancy through tiers to have final the site trusted for Google. Backlinks pointing towards final site are mostly focused around naked URL or brand names. It is natural for Google.

If you send links to PMD (partial match domain) or EMD (exact match domain) then I advise you to follow that way completely. Now brand anchors (described below) Why its so crucial for  PMD/EMD? 2 reasons:

  1. Imagine you send url-brand containing keyword to the domain that conatains this keyword. Sounds logical ?
  2. Ii keeps you far from Google’s Penguin penalty for the over overoptimazed anchor text.


Your website should receive the brand anchors, If you have that kind of PMD/EMD domain I’d recommend you to use as much naked URLs as you can. Focus on source relevancy !

“Brand” anchors

If you have legitimate, long term project website selling cakes online and it is named: “” then you have an easier job to do. Brand anchor says your company’s name. You can build  brand anchors like:

Please note I use misspelled keywords. It is natural that people don’t know the exact name often, they mistype etc….All that naturally makes sense if you don’t run a worldwide, well known big company.

Now it is easy if you have a website called selling truck parts. You can hit it with many types of anchors, be more aggressive with anchors you want to rank for. The problem is if you have an affiliate website selling ebook Ance No More and its named You can’t go agressive at all, what I recommend you is described below.

A.N.K.A. Anchors Method I do

Almost No Keyword Anchor. Naked URLs, Brand  and no Anchors at all is the way you have to follow in 2016 and I hope you also did that last year 😉 This is my strategy and it has been in a constant use for the past 2 years. I don’t value much on fitting keywords as anchors, I prefer to build relevant enviroment for Google to trust my website with according keyword. Good onpage SEO will do the rest. As you propably see it’s very safe for Penguin checker and it keeps a natural flow in time for the website. If you peak at big authority websites anchor profile you will find the exact same strategy.

Big drawback of this strategy

You must know that the idea of building naked URL, no anchor and branded  anchor backlinks have rather big drawback which is the time. I’ve already written an article about time and luck which is probably the first thing you must ready before you follow my SEO lessons. You have to be patient and let Google trust you, focusing also on other ranking factors. Anchors are one of the essential signals for the search engine where to place your website. If you don’t do much of anchors strategy at all, it will take time to rank. It is also important is also what kind of website you run and what you expect from it.

You have to ask yourself how fast you want to see the results. Think about the domain you have.

When the domain contains keyword you want to rank for then think twice before you build any strong backlink with the anchor text. It’s 2016, don’t expect quick results, find time and make money after, think long term. Stay off the keyword rich anchors !

Authority websites are the anchors’ treasure !

I’ve told you already about A.N.K.A. method I do. It takes around 70-80% of the anchors profiles in general (depends on project, goals etc.) Now there is 2 more anchors I use, here comes the 2nd one:

Lastly, generic anchors

No suprise, I also use generic keywords, just for a few % of the general anchors profile. Don’t go and copy “general keywords list” from Google. Build the ones that make sense in 2016 !

Always try to act like a regular user, remember that Google is a machine and there is NOBODY from Google that will read articles you make.

For me, that kind of keywords make more sense today. Summing up, I don’t build many generic anchors. It all depends on the project but I usually keep it 2-10% of the profile.

Last reason why I don’t stuff much keywords in anchors

The anchor text idea for each backlink you are about to make must be the part of a bigger plan, the plan for SEO in general for dedicated website. I don’t go after the main keyword – almost never ! There are a few reasons for my anchors tactic.

Firstly it’s the easiest way to act naturally for Google’s radar

Secondly, I don’t like pop music, wherever there are “masses” there is no quality. I don’t fight for major keywords, I let the others to puzzle over it. I leave it alone for domain to age, rank other keywords up.

I have never a seen big-major keyword not to rank after some time.

Thirdly, I don’t believe in short time results in SEO so I can afford to wait to see results. Refer to Time, Patience and Luck article.

Focus on the proper keyword research, well targeted for money long tail keyword might not have the biggest search volume value, but can make you some serious money.

As you see it’s pointless in my opinion to try to ranking for “buy phentermine” for my entire SEO proccess. I’m after “buy orginal phentermine from USA”, it makes sense and makes money. I don’t need anything more. I really doubt you can be millionaire by just by ranking websites that easily, not in a short time.



Anchors are one of the most important factors for ranking websites. You must treat them as a part of a big plan, the big picture of how and where you see your website in 3, 6 and 12 months. I suggest you not to complicate it too much.

Think about relevancy and build the world around your website as a legitimate and related source of backlinks.
